Columnation
2007 / MEDIUM: nylon string, cardboard / SIZE: captial of colum roughly 3' x 3' x 1'; height of entire work is variable
BRIEF
Columnation is a hybrid entity. The column is considered to be the icon of Ancient Greek and Roman architecture, and hence is highly regarded within Western artistic traditions. The capital of the column, however, is replaced with a stylized reproduction of wooden supports in Ancient Chinese temples. By juxtaposing two culturally significant architectural elements, the piece touches upon issues such as cultural identity and appropriation, and addresses today’s cosmopolitan discourse within a globalized world.
